BJP plans ‘report card’ for its MPs

The exercise handled by the parliamentary affairs ministry will give all the BJP MPs a monthly report of their performance

New Delhi: In his bid to make the BJP MPs perform better in the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning ‘report cards’ for his Parliamentarians.

This is to ensure that “silent MPs” and “poor speakers” are not allowed to participate in crucial debates on the floor. In his regular interactions with MPs, Mr Modi has been urging them to participate “as much as possible” in House debates.

The entire exercise, that may be handled by the parliamentary affairs ministry, will give the 320-odd BJP MPs in both Houses a monthly report of their performance.

The saffron MPs will be watched even when the Parliament is not in Session. Their attendance and participation in the House committees will be recorded and evaluated. The report card will be the yardstick when deciding possible inclusion in the council of ministers and leading major deb-ates in Parliament.

The BJP, which is all set to get a new team reporting to Amit Shah, will continue its policy of “one man one post.” All ministers holding organisational posts, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmednra Pradhan, Ananth Kumar, Thawar Chand Gehlot and Narendra Tomar, will give way to a new team.

“Therefore there is no question of any minister trying to cling to his or her post. This has been a practice in BJP since Mr Vajpayee days,” a BJP functionary said.
