Review: ASUS Zenfone 4

The ASUS Zenfone 4 is a good value for money for budget smartphone seekers

ASUS recently launched its new series of Zenfone- Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6. The company made sure that with the launch of the Zenfone series, it can cater to people belonging to all types of economic class. The Zenfone 4 is the cheapest smartphone as compared to Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6.

Design and feel:

The all-new Zenfone 4 handset features a 4.0-inch TFT display, which comes with a glossy finish. Even though the display has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, the fingerprint magnet invites smudges on the display easily. Its front panel sports three touch buttons-Home,Menu and Back. The audio jack and VGA camera takes its position on the top of the front display. Its power button and volume rocker sits in the extreme right of the device. The USB slot has been placed in the left side of handset. The Zenfone 4 weighs around 115g and available in five different colours - Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, Sky Blue and Solar Yellow.

On the other hand, its rear panel isn’t that easy to open, but instead needs a firm pull. The rear panel has a matte-finished surface. You will find two microSIM slots on the left side, a 5MP rear camera on the top, along with a microSD memory card slot besides it.

Specifications:

The dual-SIM Zenfone 4 features a 4.0-inch (480 x 800) pixel display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It is powered by 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 processor with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading technology and has 1GB of RAM. The smartphone runs on Android 4.3 operating system and is powered by ZenUI. The company claims that you can also update it further up to Andorid 4.4 OS. It offers an onboard internal memory of 8GB, which is also expandable using a microSD card.

ASUS Zenfone 4 features a 5MP rear shooter and a VGA front facing camera. The rear panel has a 1170 mAh removable battery, which can last up to 192 hours on stand by mode and up to 10 hours of talktime. On its connectivity front, Zenfone 4 supports Wifi 802.11 b/g/n and 3G HSPA+ and Bluetooth 4.0.

Camera:

The VGA front camera of Zenfone 4 isn’t up to the mark. It is quite grainy, which doesn’t make it efficient enough for selfies and video calling. The 5MP rear shooter performs better than its VGA front camera. In bright daylight, it can capture photos with much better clarity and isn’t grainy.

But the Zoom in option for the rear camera makes the image blurry. The camera can’t capture clear images in low-light conditions.

Audio/Video:

The Zenfone 4 budget handset offers an average video quality and supports all types of video formats. The audio quality is below average.

User Interface:

The 4.0-inch handset has a good grip and can be operated using a single hand. The handset has a user-friendly interface, which is not different from other budget smartphones already available in the Indian market.

Verdict:

If you are in search of a decent smartphone on a considerably low budget, then the ASUS Zenfone 4 is a good choice. The handset is priced at Rs 5,999 and it can be considered as a good value for money. The smartphone could make it a tough competitor for Xiaomi, Motorola and Android One.
